Conducted by an optometrist at a community clinic near you, this $29 screening assesses your vision and eye health. It helps identify whether cataracts may be contributing to the changes you've noticed, while also checking for other common eye conditions.
You're not committing to surgery or further treatment. You're simply taking the first step towards understanding your eyes.
Understand your results
Before you leave, your optometrist will explain the findings in clear, everyday language. There are generally three outcomes:
Your eyes appear healthy
You'll receive advice on maintaining your eye health and when to return for routine reviews.
Changes are present, but can be monitored
Some cataracts develop slowly and don't require immediate treatment. Monitoring over time may be all that's recommended.
A specialist assessment is recommended
If a more detailed evaluation would help, you'll be referred to an ophthalmologist within the Straits Eye network.
Your screening results accompany your referral, so your specialist consultation builds on the assessment you've already completed， you won't need to start again or repeat your story.

Not everyone who attends a screening needs specialist care. When it is recommended, your ophthalmologist will examine your eyes in greater detail, explain your diagnosis and discuss your options. For some patients, the recommendation is simply continued monitoring. For others, cataract surgery becomes one of several options to consider a decision made together, based on your eye health, lifestyle and individual needs.

Decide what happens next
Finding a cataract does not automatically mean surgery is necessary. Many people continue with regular reviews for months or even years before treatment becomes appropriate.
If surgery is recommended, your ophthalmologist will explain why, discuss lens options and provide a personalised quotation before anything is arranged. There is no expectation that you decide during the same appointment.
