Many patients delay surgery because they are unsure of the actual cost, especially without an integrated shield plan.
At The Straits Eye Centre, we focus on giving you clear answers upfront. Before you decide on anything, you will receive a personalised breakdown of what MediSave may cover, what remains payable and which options are necessary or optional.
No hidden costs. No pressure to proceed.
Cataract Surgery Cost in Singapore Without Insurance
No insurance? You may have options to manage the cost.
Most Patients Who Delay Surgery Do So Because of Cost Uncertainty, Not Clinical Reluctance

The most common reason patients wait months sometimes years before addressing a cataract is not fear of the procedure. It is the belief that surgery will cost far more than they can manage, especially without a comprehensive insurance plan.
At The Straits Eye Centre, we address this directly. Before we discuss anything clinical, we help you understand exactly what your procedure would cost, how your Medisave applies, and what if anything you would need to pay out of pocket. You will have this information in writing before you are asked to make any decision.
The gap between what patients imagine cataract surgery costs and what they actually pay after Medisave is often significant and almost nobody tells them this before they come in.
CHECKLIST ITEMS
Integrated shield plan or not, Medisave may still apply to your procedure
Standard monofocal cataract surgery is a Medisave-claimable procedure for eligible patients

Our patient services team will walk you through your individual cost estimate at the first consultation.
You will leave with a written breakdown, not a vague verbal estimate.
Understanding What Cataract Surgery Costs Without Insurance
Singapore has multiple funding pathways for cataract surgery. Most patients including those without an integrated shield plan have access to at least one of them. Here is how each works.
Your Three Payment Pathways
These are not mutually exclusive. Many patients use a combination of two or three.
Medisave
As a Singapore citizen or permanent resident, your CPF Medisave account can be used to fund approved cataract surgery procedures. Medisave withdrawal is available for both standard monofocal and many premium lens surgeries, subject to the relevant Medisave claimable limits set by CPF Board.
For many patients, Medisave alone covers a substantial portion of a standard monofocal procedure. Your exact claimable amount depends on your Medisave balance and the procedure performed.
MediShield Life
All Singapore citizens and PRs are covered under MediShield Life, which provides a base level of coverage for surgical procedures including cataract surgery. Even without an integrated shield plan top-up, MediShield Life may contribute to your costs.
Our patient services team will calculate the applicable MediShield Life benefit for your specific procedure and include it clearly in your written estimate.
Direct Payment or Instalment
As a Singapore citizen or permanent resident, your CPF Medisave account can be used to fundapproved cataract surgery procedures. Medisave withdrawal is available for both standardmonofocal and many premium lens surgeries, subject to the relevant Medisave claimable limitsset by CPF Board.
We can also discuss structured payment arrangements where clinically appropriate. Please raise this with our patient services team.
Monofocal vs Premium Lenses What Is the Difference?
One of the most common sources of confusion and anxiety in cataract surgery discussions is the difference between standard and premium lens options. Here is a plain-language comparison. Your surgeon will discuss which option is clinically suitable for your eyes at your consultation.
Standard
Monofocal
Corrects vision at a
single distance, typically distance. Reading glasses usually still needed.
Medisave Claimable
Usually for reading
Patients prioritising cost efficiency and straight forward correction
Troic
Monofocal
Corrects distance vision
plus pre-existing astigmatism. Reduces dependence on distance glasses.
Partial claim, base
claimable, premium
component is direct pay
Often reduced use of glasses, reading glasses typically still needed
Patients with significant
astigmatism who want
clearer distance vision
Extended Depth of Focus (EDOF)
Provides a continuous
range of vision from distance to intermediate. Reduces overall glasses dependence.
Partial claim, premium
component is direct pay
Reduced use of glasses, fine print may still need glasses
Active patients who want good distance and
computer vision
Multifocal or
Trifocal
Corrects vision across
near, intermediate, and
distance. Maximum spectacle independence.
Partial claim, higher premium
component is direct pay
Significantly reduced use of glasses, many patients glasses-free
Patients seeking maximum independence from spectacles and willing to manage adaptation period
Our approach to lens discussion: You will never be recommended a premium lens without a clear clinical rationale. Your surgeon will explain which options are appropriate for your eyes and your lifestyle and our team will show you exactly what each option costs before you decide. There is no pressure to choose premium.
What Happens at Your First Consultation
Coming in for a surgical consultation can feel like a commitment you are not ready to make. It is not. Here is exactly what the first visit involves and what it does not.
01 Arrival & registration

You will be greeted by our patient services team. There are no forms asking about your insurance status as a precondition of being seen. Please bring your NRIC or passport, your spectacles, and any referral letters if you have them.
Allow approximately 10–15 minutes for registration and initial paperwork.
04 Cost discussion & written estimate

Following the surgical consultation, our patient services coordinator will sit with you to walk through the complete cost structure. This includes the Medisave-claimable amount for your procedure, any MediShield Life benefit that applies, the cost of different lens options if relevant, and the out-of-pocket amount you would pay after all funding sources are applied.
You are under no obligation to book surgery at this stage. Most patients take one to two weeks to consider their options after receiving their estimate.
02 Diagnostic imaging & measurements

A trained ophthalmic technician will perform detailed measurements of your eyes using non-invasive imaging equipment. This typically includes biometry, corneal topography, and a slit-lamp examination. These measurements inform the surgeon's assessment and if surgery is indicated help determine the precise lens power required.
This step takes approximately 30–45 minutes and is entirely painless.
05 Your decision, in your own time

We will not follow up with sales calls or time-pressure messages. If you have questions after your consultation, you can reach us by phone, email, or WhatsApp. When you are ready to proceed or if you decide another clinic is a better fit we are available to help with either outcome.
We respond to every enquiry within the same business day
03 Surgeon consultation

Your surgeon will review the imaging results with you in plain language. They will explain what the findings show, whether surgery is clinically indicated, and if so what surgical options are appropriate for your specific eyes and lifestyle. You will have the opportunity to ask any questions you have. There is no time pressure.
The surgeon consultation typically takes 20–30 minutes.
